PCLI statement on Bill Ritter stepping away from anchor desk

Posted on Jun. 15, 2026  /  0

As you may know, WABC's Bill Ritter announced Friday that he is stepping away from Eyewitness News anchor duties following an Alzheimer's diagnosis. Ritter said he'll remain at the station to help younger journalists and will cover Alzheimer's and its impact on patients and families.

The Press Club of Long Island applauds Ritter's dedication to his craft. While many would call it a day, Ritter is choosing to help others: those on their journalism journeys and those confronted by a disease that impacts far too many in this country.
We are proud to call him a PCLI member, wish him the best and look forward to his work ahead, which hopefully spurs change in a multitude of ways, including costs, and ultimately results in a cure.
Sincerely,
PCLI President Cecilia Dowd
