Alyssa Tappin has emerged as one of the most accomplished and recognized student journalists on Long Island through her work with 91.9-FM WSHR, Sachem’s 6,000-watt educational radio station and multiplatform media hub. She has developed a journalism portfolio that mirrors collegiate and professional-level production, contributing across radio, digital, social media, live broadcasting and sports coverage.

As student station manager of WSHR, Alyssa has played a leadership role in producing and anchoring major live broadcasts and special programming. Her reporting has earned historic recognition. Alyssa became the first student journalist ever to receive the Suffolk County Football Coaches Association Student Media Award, an honor that led to two feature stories in the New York Post and a television feature on Fox 5 New York highlighting her journey in sports journalism. She was also recognized as Sachem Football’s first-ever Media Person of the Year and was part of WSHR’s 2025 12th Man Award-winning coverage team.

She will attend the University of Alabama in the fall to study news media and sports broadcasting.

In memory of UPI reporter and Mineola pressroom veteran Hank Logeman, who was an influence on many journalists throughout the years, the Hank Logeman High School Journalism Award & Scholarship is designed to support and promote high school journalism on Long Island. The $2,000 scholarship is awarded to an outstanding high school journalist/broadcaster, newspaper, or radio station that does the most to promote high school journalism on Long Island.
