June 8: From the Newsroom to the Classroom: How to Land a College Teaching Post

Journalism needs its next generation of great reporters, editors, broadcasters and producers, and it needs great professors to foster growth in young and aspiring journalists. If you’re a journalist who’s contemplated transitioning from the newsroom to the classroom, this hourlong panel discussion is for you. We’ll hear from three experienced journalism educators, each of whom has also been an outstanding reporter. We’ll discuss how to land your first teaching post, how to effectively manage a classroom, and how to advise young people on the ins and outs of journalism.

Our Distinguished Speakers

Liza Burby has been an adjunct professor for Adelphi University’s communication department in Garden City since 2003. She teaches newspaper and magazine feature writing classes, and magazine editing and production courses for which students produce a published magazine. In 2012, she was promoted to senior adjunct professor. Burby is also the faculty adviser to the school paper, The Delphian. She has been a freelance writer and editor for over 30 years and still writes for Newsday, national magazines and websites and has written 40 books.

Zachary Dowdy, an assistant professor of practice at Stony Brook University, has been an instructor in SBU’s journalism program since 2003. He has also worked for The Boston Herald and The Boston Globe. More recently, he was a rewrite and criminal justice reporter and United Nations correspondent for Newsday. At Stony Brook, Dowdy is co-coordinator of the Robert W. Greene Summer Institute for High School Journalists, a weeklong residential journalism program boot camp for students.

Holli Haerr is chair of the Mass Communications Department at Five Towns College, where she has helped create multiple broadcast, reporting and journalism classes. She started as an adjunct at FTC and St. John’s University in 2016. At the time, she was still a freelance reporter/anchor at 1010 WINS. She became a faculty member at Five Towns shortly after and still occasionally freelances at WINS. Haerr was previously a reporter, writer and anchor for TV and radio stations in New York and Washington, D.C., for more than 25 years, including WINS, News 12, FiOS1 News and the Associated Press.
