September 21: The Education Beat Is the Democracy Beat

Posted on Sep. 12, 2023  /  0

Amy Zimmer of Chalkbeat, Joie Tyrrell of Newsday and Adam Fine of East Hampton School District join the Press Club of Long Island this Thursday for a discussion of education reporting moderated by Christine Sampson of The East Hampton Star. Register for the Zoom link.

Thorough coverage of education has huge implications for democracy. Schools are where children are shaped into future community leaders — where civic responsibilities are learned along with reading, math, science and history. Public schools collect millions of dollars in tax revenue from their communities every year, with finances stewarded by publicly elected boards of education. The Press Club of Long Island's education reporting event, "The Education Beat Is the Democracy Beat," will feature three distinguished panelists with knowledge of school districts ranging in size from modest and rural to massive and urban. Hear what they have to say about hot-button educational issues; learn story ideas and insider tips; and find inspiration in the experiences of both journalists and educators.

This event will take place via Zoom on Thursday, September 21, at 7 p.m. Eastern. Register for the Zoom link.

The Panel:

Amy Zimmer is Chalkbeat's New York bureau chief. She is an award-winning journalist who previously covered education for the New York news site DNAinfo. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Metro newspaper, and City Limits, among other outlets. Her book, “Meet Miss Subways,” examines one of the nation’s first integrated beauty contests.

Joie Tyrrell is an education staff writer at Newsday. Joie grew up on Long Island and has been a lifelong reader of Newsday and just marked her 25th year with the company. She previously worked at newspapers throughout the country and had stints as s reporter at news organizations in Arizona, North Carolina and New Jersey. In addition to education, she has reported on local government, health and crime.

Adam Fine has been superintendent of the East Hampton Union Free School District since July 2021, rising through the ranks of teacher, principal and assistant superintendent over his many years in the education field. In 2016, he was named Administrator of the Year by the Long Island Council of Administrators and Supervisors. He is a co-founder of the South Fork Behavioral Health Initiative, boosting mental health care for students across districts. He is also a parent, so he sees education from multiple sides.

The discussion will be moderated by Christine Sampson, the award-winning education reporter and deputy managing editor at The East Hampton Star, who has been enthusiastically covering this beat for the last 13 years.
